They are sometimes, running anywhere between 50 to 100 virtual machines and require the ability to model complex network problems. Gregory Carter owns and operates Applied Engineering Software Group, AESGI, in Wisconsin. AESGI manages storage, network and server operations for third party contractors for a variety of companies, primarily in the ISP, telecommunications and logistics and supply industry. Secondarily, AESGI, deals with enterprise operations and analytic measurement and problem resolution in the same areas. A lot of their time is spent tracking down problems and redesigning issues of data center operations or cloud computing operations that are not working optimally. Before the Panther 5SE Mobile Server, AESGI used to haul around a desktop class system in excess of 80 pounds to and from customer sites. The problems didnt end there, sometimes simply plugging in the desktop machine would pull 600 watts and trip a UPS as well. The Panther 5SE, on the other hand, simply nibbles around 130 watts. The analytic, software development, infrastructure management work I do on the server, storage and network problems many of my customers have requires simulation study. So, I used to haul around a desktop class system and run many of my own tool sets for identifying customer problems on that machine. It became a pain to haul around 80 pounds of gear. Sometimes it was a problem at a customer site to fit the gear in a customer facility if it had to stay on site overnight, it was simply too big. When I saw an X79 class chipset in a laptop that could run a XEON class server processor, I decided to have a look at the Panther 5SE. I found the machine could run all of the tool sets I use, just as well as the desktop server machine I would haul around. So a lot of my time is spent on tracking down problems or redesign issues of data center operations or your typical cloud computing operations that are not working that well. Sometimes a customer will become frustrated because of a vendor deadlock to resolve the problems, so they hire me to come in and look at a problem as a neutral party. I then redesign the software, add software or debug the software to identify the problem so that the vendor, customer or I can fix/resolve it. So the typical projects for the company tend to be fairly diverse both large and small in the types of server, storage and networking and or software problems I have to deal with. Features of the EUROCOM Panther 5SE that particularly assist AESGI: The bonus of course, all the gear was reduced in weight to about 15 pounds. Hefty for sure for a laptop, but not quite 80 pounds. Furthermore it could fit on my lap in a pinch. In poorly designed data centers, sometimes plugging in the larger desktop machine would pull 600 Watts, and trip a UPS over as well. The Panther 5SE nibbles at around 130 Watts of power at max load, 300 watts with both bricks if I install a top end XEON, and load the drive bays. So with that much power under the hood in such a compact form factor solutions for customers problems and my own problems of dealing with business continuity can be demonstrated on site, not just on a whiteboard but for real due to the Panther 5SE. That builds trust and confidence in many of the engineering solutions I have created with the Panther 5SE. 30 589 Windows 9 is reportedly coming as early as Sept. 30, and it’s got some big changes. A new report says Microsoft will give the world a first look at the new version of Windows on Sept. 30 or soon afterward at a press event to announce a developer build of the software. The Verge reports the date is tentative, but the general timeframe is the end of September/beginning of October. The software will be a “preview” version meant for developers, the report says, so it’s unclear if the rumored public beta for Windows 9 would begin at the same time. See also: Was Windows 8 a Mistake? Microsoft Seems to Think So Windows 9, which Microsoft has codenamed “Threshold,” will revamp Windows to address some key usability criticisms of Windows 8/8.1. For starters, it’s bringing back the Start menu (which was “blown out” into the Start screen with Windows 8) and enhancing it with some elements of the “modern” UI. Also, modern Windows apps will be able to run within a window on the Desktop. Cortana , the voice assistant on Windows Phone, is also expected to appear in Windows 9, although she may not be in the developer preview that’s supposed to launch in the fall. HTC said it developed the new model at the request of Microsoft, which has been trying to boost its Windows Phone system. The company will continue to make an Android version of the One, as well as other Android phones. “By no means does this indicate we’re moving away from Android,” HTC spokesman Jeff Gordon said. HTC was the first company to release a phone using Google’s Android operating system back in 2008, but it now lags behind Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo and other makers of Android phones despite critical acclaim for the HTC One. HTC was also the first to release a Windows phone, in 2002, but it hasn’t had a new one since 2012. Gordon said HTC has been waiting until it had something strong enough to compete with Lumia phones from Nokia, a business Microsoft now owns. A mid-range device, he said, “would completely be overshadowed by the competition.” HTC also benefits from Microsoft’s decision this year to give away its Windows Phone software for use in phones, as Google does with Android. The strategy reduces manufacturing costs for phone makers. Yet the move comes as sales of Microsoft’s phones are declining. In the second quarter, IDC said 7.4 million phones were shipped worldwide, for a 2.5 percent share, compared with 8.2 million and 3.4 percent a year earlier. Android’s share increased to 85 percent in that period. IDC said HTC had a worldwide market share of less than 2 percent, the bulk for Android. The Android version of HTC One is called M8, while the Windows version will be called M8 for Windows. The two look identical on the outside, except for a Windows Phone logo. Both sport metal exteriors and have screens measuring 5 inches diagonally. The Windows phone will be available starting Tuesday through Verizon Wireless for $100 with a two-year contract and $600 without one. HTC said Microsoft had to tweak its software to support the HTC One’s features. For instance, the phone has a second rear camera to capture depth information so that users can later change which parts of images are in focus. Windows typically deals with a single rear camera. HTC will also bring to the Windows phone its BlinkFeed hub for personalized content. But less-used camera features will disappear in the transition. 
Automotive head-units are transitioning from proprietary architectures requiring long development cycles and Tier1-led integration efforts towards platform designs. Ford set the tone back in 2007 with its SYNC solution based on CPU hardware from Freescale and the Windows Embedded OS allowing quicker development time frames and independence from the previously dominant Tier1 suppliers. With head-unit infotainment, HMI, clusters, safety, and telematics complexity continuing to increase, hardware approaches are consolidating and evolving towards reference designs and open platforms such as the open source GENIVI stack, already adopted by BMW. This allows car OEMs to increase the reuse of software and middleware while decreasing costs and time-to-market and at the same time leveraging open ecosystems of suppliers, says VP and practice director Dominique Bonte. Consumer chipset vendors such as Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, and NVIDIA are increasingly targeting automotive as a new business development opportunity, hereby competing with established automotive chipset suppliers such as Freescale, Renesas, TI, and STMicroelectronics. While automotive semiconductor vendors still enjoy the highest market shares in computing processors (Freescale) and Bluetooth (CSR), consumer chipset players such as Qualcomm and Broadcom already have the highest market shares in cellular baseband and Wi-Fi chipsets respectively. Newcomers in automotive computing processors such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Intel are just starting to grab market share but will become major players in the future driven by platform approaches and automotive grade chipset designs.
